a tl;dr about artistic fear

Most of you probably don’t know this about me, because it was several years ago, but when I first got into drawing humans, I drew girls in a big-eyed moe style that I enjoyed drawing immensely. I wasn’t really very good at it, but never mind that. 

The thing that I want to tell you is that moe style is extremely hard for me now, because I stopped drawing that way very abruptly about two years ago, after an argument with a friend. This friend told me that the way I drew “was not art,” and that I should change to realism because that was the “only art.“ 

Of course, this is utter bullcrap, and people like that should learn to keep their unfortunate opinions to themselves, but it really stuck to me anyway. I tried to brush it off when I was talking to this friend, I defended the way I drew and tried to tell him that I was going to improve and learn new techniques, but every time I drew that way after that fateful conversation, I didn’t enjoy it anymore. I was scared.
